About the event
This year marks the fifth year of the annual UVA Student Oratory Contest, a new tradition here at the University. Students write and deliver five-minute speeches on pro-democracy topics, before a bipartisan panel of judges comprised of former White House and Cabinet-level speechwriters. Held each year in the Dome Room of the Rotunda, the contest is shared on video with thousands of alumni and parents worldwide through the UVA Office of Engagements. This year’s speech prompt honors the 250th anniversary of the Declaration: “Tell the story of an event in American history that embodies the values of the Declaration of Independence.” Think Again and the College are the lead co-sponsors of the competition, and interim President Paul Mahoney will open the competition and award the $1000 cash prizes to the graduate and undergraduate winners.
